Second Breaks: Making Our Way Through Midlife Reinvention

“Every step we take reorganizes the landscape around us.” — Donna Bond

Here’s the truth. The higher we are on the proverbial career ladder, the harder it is to let go and start something new.

There’s just so much to … well, let go!

It doesn’t even matter if we loved the things we’re letting go of or not. It just feels like there’s so much at stake to deliberately choose to get off one particular ladder and pick a new one.

First of all, by the time we get to midlife, and especially if we’ve been on ONE successful career path, our identities are so tied to that career.

Imagine for a second how you typically introduce yourself to new people. If you tend to lead with what you do as a way to introduce yourself, then you know what I mean when I say our identities are tied to our careers.

And if we do manage to gather enough courage to take a chance, then we try to compensate by drawing up a tight script of how things should unfold happen. We do this because we’re trying our best to guarantee as much as our success before we fully commit to the change.

This hardly ever works.

We have to release our hold of the thing before we can grab onto something else. We have to make space for the new things in our lives. And we have to be open to the new thing – which by definition is new, meaning we don’t know much about it, and therefore, we cannot really plan so tightly.

All this is what we’ll be talking about today with my guest Donna Bond, who underwent a pretty significant career and personal reinvention herself.

Today, Donna Bond is a Spiritual advisor, and a Business and Life coach. She is the author of Original Wisdom: Harness the Power of the Authentic You.

But before she found this new path, Donna was near the top of her chosen career ladder in marketing. She had worked long and hard to attain that success and so it was not a small matter to deliberately leave it for something else new and so totally different from her career path.

So in this episode, we talk about letting go — of job titles, of existing metrics of success, and of identities.

  • About what it takes to let go so we can make space for new experiences and new identities
  • Donna shares what she did to bridge where she was to where she can be. This is a great approach, especially if you don’t know exactly where you want to be and you’re in the experimentation stage.
  • Donna said, “every step we make changes the landscape”, and so instead of tight plans, she talks of a having compass instead. This idea that every time we take action, it changes the landscape really struck me and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. What we do and how we do it affects what happens next. We are co-creators of our world, as long as we are taking action and not simply being bystanders.
